What is a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is a dental procedure during which your tooth is completely removed from its socket. Sometimes, people refer to this as “pulling" a tooth.

What happens before a tooth extraction?

Your dentist will examine your affected tooth and the surrounding gums carefully. Dental X-rays will be taken to assess bone levels and evaluate the extent of damage. Make sure to inform your dentist about any medications, vitamins, or supplements you are taking. After gathering all necessary information, your dentist will discuss treatment options and sedation choices with you in depth.

Sedation options in dentistry

Many healthcare providers offer sedation during tooth extractions and other dental procedures to help patients manage dental anxiety or discomfort. Here are the types of sedation commonly used in dentistry:

Oral conscious sedation involves taking a sedative pill, such as diazepam or lorazepam, about an hour before the dental procedure. This type of sedation can be used alone or combined with nitrous oxide or IV sedation. Patients opting for oral sedation will need someone to drive them home afterward.

Intravenous (IV) sedation is recommended for those with significant anxiety or longer procedures. Medications like midazolam and meperidine are delivered through an IV line, providing a deeper level of sedation. Patients undergoing IV sedation should arrange for transportation on the day of the procedure.

In complex cases or for extensive procedures, your dental provider may suggest general anesthesia in a hospital setting, particularly for surgeries like facial reconstruction or corrective jaw surgery.
