Invisible Braces: A Clear Way to a Winning Smile

Gone are the days when achieving straight teeth and a confident smile meant enduring the visibility of traditional wire and bracket braces. Invisible braces now offer an aesthetic and nearly imperceptible alternative, boosting self-esteem and physical confidence.

While invisible braces may not be suitable for complex misalignment cases or certain bite issues better addressed by traditional orthodontics, they are effective for treating conditions such as:

  • Overbite or overjet
  • Crowded or widely spaced teeth
  • Crooked teeth

Designed primarily for adults and older teenagers, invisible braces are not recommended for individuals with remaining baby teeth. Children and younger teenagers requiring orthodontic treatment typically opt for traditional metal braces with visible brackets and wires.

It's crucial to consult with your dentist or orthodontist to determine if you are a suitable candidate for invisible braces. This alternative treatment requires strict cooperation, with the aligners worn for about 22 hours a day and must not be forgotten or misplaced.

Types

Popular types of invisible braces include ceramic brackets, inside braces, and clear aligners. Ceramic braces resemble traditional metal braces but use tooth-colored brackets (and sometimes wires) for a less noticeable appearance. They are generally non-staining but may require regular adjustments of ligatures to maintain their appearance.

However, ceramic braces are not as strong as metal braces and may require longer treatment times. They can also be more expensive and may cause some irritation and discomfort, similar to metal braces. Additionally, there is a possibility of tooth abrasion if the brackets come into contact with the teeth.

Inside braces, also known as lingual braces or iBraces, are attached to the back of the teeth, making them virtually invisible from the front. They are custom-made using scanned images of the teeth, but they can be more costly and may pose challenges with speech, comfort, and dental hygiene.

Clear aligners, such as Invisalign and ClearCorrect, are removable trays that fit over the teeth and are nearly invisible. They offer minimal discomfort and are easy to remove for eating, brushing, and special occasions. Clear aligners do not have brackets or wires and are resistant to clouding from wear.

Each type of invisible braces has its advantages and disadvantages, so it's essential to consult with your orthodontist to determine the best option for your specific needs.

Length of Treatment

The duration of treatment for invisible braces varies depending on your individual case and the type of braces you are using. Generally, braces are worn for 18 to 24 months, although some cases may require a longer duration.

Metal braces typically offer the shortest treatment time because they are made from the strongest materials. On the other hand, ceramic braces, while aesthetically pleasing, may take longer to achieve the desired results as they are not as durable as metal braces. Inside braces can also require more time for effective alignment.

Clear aligners like Invisalign and ClearCorrect have varying treatment times. Invisalign treatment usually involves wearing 20 to 30 aligners for both upper and lower teeth and can take around nine to 15 months to complete. ClearCorrect treatment times range from 12 to 24 months, depending on the severity of the alignment issues. Moderate cases may require 32 steps of treatment delivered in eight phases, while minor cases may need 12 steps of treatment delivered in three phases.
